What’s the Difference Between Medicare Supplement Insurance and Medicare Advantage?

The two are very different even though many people confuse them. Medicare Supplement Insurance (also called Medigap) is offered by private insurance companies to fill in the gaps/ what is not covered by Original Medicare Parts A & B. Medicare does not cover 100% of expenses and, in fact, has potentially high risk by itself.

A Medicare Advantage plan (also known as Part C) is a replacement for Original Medicare—in fact, you disenroll from Original Medicare and choose to be under the rules and requirements of the Medicare Advantage company/plan. You are no longer under Medicare. The key characteristic of Medicare Advantage plans is that they work like an HMO/PPO network, meaning you may have network restrictions when you need health care.
